DIY Christmas Art Prints
This is a super easy DIY that anyone can do. It’s a perfect crafty, family activity for this holiday season but it ALSO will make beautiful art prints that you can use as a part of your Christmas décor year after year.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
Paint ( White, Black & Gold and One Color of Your Choice for the Background)
2 “Chip” or Cheap Paint Brushes ( 1”- 2” Wide) OR Small 1” Sponge Brushes
1 Small Tip/Detail Paint Brush
Art Paper or Cardstock
Frame of your Choice ( Can be frames you already own, or frames you buy!)
Bonus Tip: I LOVE finding frames at thrift stores! There is usually a huge variety for GREAT prices, PERFECT for this DIY project!
Step #1
Measure your frames and cut your art paper to size. I find the easiest way to do this is simply take the glass out of the frame and trace it.
If your frame doesn’t have glass, measure the back opening and don’t forget to measure the large opening, not the front lip that holds the art in place.
Step #2
If you are going to paint your frames, now is the time so that they can be drying while you paint your prints! If not you can move on to the next step!
I chose to paint my wood frames black since they were thrifted and a little beat up.
Step #3
Take a pencil and very lightly draw a very loose curved line near the bottom third of your print. This will be the outline of your snowy hills!
If you are doing multiple prints like me, you can even have your hills line up to make one large piece of art when all paired together!
Take your “fun” paint color of your choice and paint the top half of your print all the way down to your “snow” line. Fill it in solid and let it dry.
Fill in under the snow line with the white paint.
Bonus Tip: Add extra paint and dab the white to give it a snow texture.
Step #4
It’s time to add your tree line! I penciled in lines first to get my spacing how I wanted them and also to stagger my heights where it looked balanced. Then take your detail brush and your black paint and start by drawing the lines for your trunks. Stagger them randomly but don’t put them tooooo close together because we are going to add branches.
To add the branches, simply use small, downward, fan like brush strokes with your detail brush and work your way across the tree line. You will want to water down your black paint on a plate, that way you can mix and add more water and less water as needed as you add your layers. It’s okay if some of your tree branches overlap.
Pro Tip: Practice your branch technique on some scrap paper till you figure out what works best for you.
Bonus Pro Tip: Start at the bottom of the tree and work your way up for the most realistic shadows.
P.S: I know this is the scary and tricky part, but DONT OVERTHINK IT. The messier and more relaxed you are, the more natural your trees will look!
Step #5
It’s time to add the magic! Take your little brush again and using the same white as before, brush off most of the paint and brush strokes of “snow” randomly on your branches. You can add as much or as little snow onto your trees as you would like.
Then to add a little shimmer, do the same thing with your gold paint but much less. Think of this as a little accent or Christmas ornaments!
Step #6
Okay LAST STEP! Simply frame your print once it’s dry and that’s it!
Style it on your side table, add it to your gallery wall or lean in up on your mantle and layer it with some garland and lights. The options are endless for styling and enjoying your DIY Christmas Art Print!
Bonus Tip: I find that framing it without the glass gives you more texture and looks like a fancy painted canvas print!
I hope you enjoy this DIY and have fun with it!
There are so many ways to customize it from the frame color, to adding ornaments to your trees, playing with the background color or even writing some of your favorite Christmas song lyrics in the snow.
Be creative and if you try this DIY out for yourself pleeeeaaase share it with me so I can see how it turned out!
Have a very Merry Christmas!
