How To Easily Clean Out A Used Candle ( and Ideas for Re-Using Your Vessel!)

This is BY far the easiest, cleanest, and lowest effort way that I’ve found to clean out an old candle so I can reuse the container or vessel that it is in. No chipping, scraping, scrubbing or freezing required. This little hack has made it so easy to reuse and refill old candle vessels over and over again, and I just know it’s gonna blow your mind.

Oh and all you need is some boiling water and a little dish soap. Here’s whatcha do…

Step #1:

Boil some water ( if you have an electric kettle or something really easy to pour out of, even better!)

Step #2:

While your water is boiling, warm up the used candle in your hands. Just take the chill out of the glass so that it doesn’t shatter when you pour the boiling water in.

Step #3:

Slowly fill the vessel with your boiling water alllllllll the way to the top.

Step #4:

Let it sit and watch the magic happen. The wax will slowly melt and float to the top and the boiling water will also melt the glue holding the base of the wicks down.

Step #5 :

After about an hour ( or whenever the wax has hardened on the top again ) simply lift the wax off the top of the water and throw it away. You can also go ahead and easily remove the wicks from the bottom of the glass at this time too.

*Optional : Repeat steps #3, #4 and #5 as many times as you need to in order to remove the majority of the wax to make cleaning a breeze!

Step #6:

Now that you have removed the wax and wicks, simply give it a little cleaning with some dish soap and water and you will have a sparkling clean vessel ready to use with almost zero effort!

Bonus: Here’s Some Fun Ways To Re-Purpose Your Old Vessels

  • Unique Drinking Glass

  • Cotton Swap Canister In Bathroom

  • Spare Change Bowl

  • Refill With Wax To Make Another Candle!

I hope this was helpful and made reusing your favorite candle dishes a little easier. Oh… and I would love to hear YOUR ideas for reusing old candle vessels! Please share them with us in the comments below :)
